Genre Decision Blog
In the end, we all agreed to follow the thriller genre. After researching the elements of thriller, horror, and drama genres, we felt that thriller was the most fitting for our project. The thriller genre combines aspects of horror and drama into one, which allows thriller films to be unique and creative. When our group came together we all had differing ideas on what the genre of the opening sequence would be. The top 4 genres that were debated among us were fantasy, horror, drama, and thriller. Fantasy is definitely a fun genre and would be great to try and incorporate into our film. Yet, we had to discard it because it would require a lot of props and location changes, which is difficult to do with a global pandemic. Then, our group began researching the three remaining genres. Action is certainly one that came to our minds as the genre we wanted to do. We researched it but unfortunately had to discard that idea, since we did not have the facilities to produce something with that genre. The genre usually contains elements of extreme disasters, such as explosions, and use of weapons. We would have no idea how to incorporate such things in our opening. Thus, it was discarded. The problem with the drama genre was that it would require more than the 2 minute time limit that we have to produce our film. Our film was now going to be either in the horror genre or the thriller genre. We all debated on which we liked the best, some group members stating that horror was the better option. We discovered that horror was the easiest to set the scene with in the 2 minutes of the opening sequence. However, it also was more gory and hard to directly portray actions and dialogue. On the other hand, the thriller genre allowed for more creativity within the film and more room for suspense. During this unforeseen global pandemic, we had to create a film within a genre that could use props and locations that were easily accessible. The thriller genre filled this role, as the only thing we had to do was make sure to create suspense. The setting could be somewhere like our neighborhoods and houses, and the quality of the opening would be based mostly on our production skills. Our final decision and conclusion of the opening scene genre would be thriller based.
