Researching editing skills

My group and I have not started filming yet but we will very soon. Since we aren't yet filming, each of us is trying to get the most prepared we can. This will help us be ready when we do start filming and it's time to edit. Prior to taking this class, I had never filmed an entire video nor edited one. This course has helped me to develop my editing skills but I do need lots of practice still. Which is why currently, I am investigating editing skills and techniques essential for our film which is a thriller based film. The way our title is going to be edited is in a very spooky feature with very dark colors. Most likely with a knife as a symbol of danger and horror. The titles give a representation of the film and in this case, our film is based on kidnapping. Also, according to research, numerous thriller films fast and slow editing in their films. This is very good at conveying emotions and generating suspense. This type of editing will be very useful when the mom, the villain of the film, is set to go on with her sinister plan. Mostly, slow editing as it usually used right before something is going to happen. This then, generates suspense within the audience as they are waiting for it to happen. A shallow focus will be of much use in our film. A shallow focus is used to encourage the audience to focus on something specific, for example a weapon. As the evil mom in our film is prepping her sinister plan, she uses many objects. We will most likely need this shallow focus so the audience can focus on the "knives" and the rest of the objects she uses. This type of focus is also used to focus on somebody's face. In this case, it would be the mom's face so the audience is able to view her face expression as she gets ready. These are all very helpful editing techniques that will be quite essential in our thriller film.
