Genre Research: Thriller

When conducting our genre research on thriller we entered our findings on a PowerPoint. This PowerPoint consists of different elements and aspects of the thriller genre. We included mise-en-scene, camera angles/shots and editing into this PowerPoint. Our group began with the most common type of lighting in the thriller genre. We provided examples of the most common type of lighting from various thriller films, which is low key lighting. Next, our group researched the different types of camera angles most commonly found in thriller films. For example the most common angles are high and tilted angles. We furthered our knowledge in the CAMS section of thriller by noting additional relevant types of camera movements. These relevant camera movements were the pan and the zoom. As we continued on to different components of the thriller genre, we came upon mise-en-scene; which is made up of lighting, costumes, makeup, and setting. The most used type of lighting, as already mentioned in thriller genres would be low key lighting. As for props, knives and violent objects are used for aggression. In thriller films, a dark, spooky type of setting would be most likely used. Characters are normally dressed throughout the film as to create realism and make the audience feel that they could be in the same situation. Moving on to a different aspect researched within the thriller genre, sounds such as eerie, diegetic, non-diegetic, fast paced, and and high pitched were all found to be very commonly used in such films. Through research, our group found that movies such as Happy Death Day, Us, and You Should Have Left, all held onto a similar theme within them: suspense. Unanimously, we all agreed that we enjoyed the danger, excitement, suspense, and tension within these thriller movies. Although, some of our members disliked how violent and gory specific scenes were. They felt as though they would cause psychological trauma upon the audience, viewers, and listeners. As we finished this assigned PowerPoint, our knowledge in the movie and film industry grew. Our group is now able to accurating pinpoint and showcase various types of CAMS, mise-en-scene, editing, and sounds. With this knowledge, we are now able to accurately film and produce our upcoming filming project for AICE Media.
